Rockin' Robin, tweet tweet tweet

Rockin' Robin, as sung by the Jackson Five, was the bane of my grammar school existence. John Turner used to sing it to me every day on the bus. Also, lots of jokes about Batman and Robin, Robin (robbing) the bank, Robin Hood, etc. Hilarious. But the song was the worst. Over and over, every day. Kind of like the way it is stuck in your head now. He rocks through the treetops, all day long...

Third-grade angst aside, lets talk about tweeting. As in Twitter. As in I am in a self-taught crash course in Twitter via a personal account so I can start Twittering professionally for work (is that an oxymoron or what?). I was trying to avoid this, but apparently all the kids are doing it, even in the business world, and I figured its safer to muddle my way through on my own before I create a profile for work and drag our sterling reputation into the muck and mire of social networking, late to the game though we may be.

Besides Julia @hookedonhouses (and thanks again Julia for my first tweet) do any of you Twitter? Got any advice, tips, or tweets for me? You can find me at @abirdinthehand.

He rocks in the tree tops all day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and singing his song
All the little birdies on Jaybird Street
Love to hear the robin go tweet tweet tweet

Rockin' robin, tweet tweet tweet
Rockin' robin' tweet tweetly-tweet
Blow rockin' robin
'Cause we're really gonna rock tonight...

I'm not a Twit (or is it a "Twat"?). Should I be?

P.S. I got a lot of weather jokes in grade school.

Oh Raina, I feel for you. Aren't grade schoolers just the cruelest?

I'll let you know how the tweeting goes and then you can decide if you want to be a twit with me.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I mean, as L.U. pointed out, no one really wants to know when you've eaten a sandwich. I'm going to hand in there for a trial run, though.

I don't Twitter. I've read what you and The Ladies have been Twittering and it seems a bit odd...why not just text? On the name thing: I've been asked a thousand times, "Where's D'Nephew?" Ha-ha, like I've never heard that before. Or, remember that song by SWV, "I get so weak in the knees I can hardly breathe. I loose all control..." Well, the "popular" girls in school would sing, "I get so sick of Denise I can hardly breathe..." It was awesome.

I'm so glad you're on Twitter now, Robin! I thought the same thing that twoladiesinwaiting said--I mean, what was the point of broadcasting what I was doing at any given moment? "I'm going to the grocery store. Need milk." Who cares?

I was surprised to discover that there's a great community of people on Twitter. I've made some new friends, gotten lots of new readers for my blog, and discovered some websites I hadn't heard of before. I'm not as dedicated to it as some people are, but I do enjoy checking in a few times a day to see what people are chatting about.

I even follow people like @MCHammer, some of the characters from "Mad Men," and a very funny joke writer for David Letterman. They keep me pretty entertained.

do a twitter post to give us non-twitter folks a heads up. is it different than updating your status constantly on facebook? I dunno from twittering. however, I feel your song bane of existence pain. Here are the songs I hate. I hate Sherry by Frankie Vallie (worst song ever) my last name sort of rhymed with baby so people would insert that instead of baby. great fun! also, steve perry's oh sherri really pissed me off a great deal.

Hi Sherri - I'mnot on facebook but if updating on facebook is anything like updating on LinkedIn then, yes, it is the same idea. But different, because you can have mini-conversations with people. All tweets are only 140 characters, so you have to get creative. I've added a string of my tweets on the right hand column of my blog so you can see what a few of them look like. The ones that begin with "@" and a username are specific messages or replies to another twitter user, the ones that don't have "@" and a name are just my updates.

PS - all of this I learned by doing, and I have no idea what I am doing.

Thanks for posting about this. I'm not sure I want to take on any more online -- it seems to take a lot of time away from reading and other things. Do you find it's hard to get away from your computer? I don't have a facebook account either. I have one on LinkedIn, but it's rather lame.

I feel sorry for you with the Robin song; that's really annoying! Do people still say that to you, thinking they are being cute?

If it makes you feel happy, I LOVE 'Rockin' Robin'. We play it in my bushband at the end of the gig when everyone is all danced out from bushdancing. It always gets them up to dance again! ... we do all the 12 bar blues... Blue Suede Shoes etc and play the whole set for about 10 minutes.. a great end to every night! A-M xx

Funny story... kids are sooo mean... but really it is COOL... you had your own song! Not everyone can say that! I, however, was named after a song!

Twitter... I can't twitter... I'm just learning facebook... and I rarely go there... sigh... always something new.

ENJOY your weekend!

I am totally, totally mystified by Twitter. I can't figure it out - either how to work it properly or to understand its appeal. I'm trying it for a while to see if it makes any sense.

I'm avoiding twitter, I can hardly keep up with blogging. If I added a new tech hobby, I think I'd go for a Flicker account.

Although I don't know anything about Twitter, I can definitely relate to the ribbing about your name...my name is Robin too! Even now, an elderly man who goes to church with me sings "The Red, Red Robin" to me every Sunday!! I guess we will never outgrow it!
